Buying furniture online is far cheaper than buying it in the shops, this is due to staffing costs, building costs and other expenses not included when selling online, or at least reduced significantly.

Obviously buying online, there will be the odd shady company lurking amongst other reputable companies.

Here are a few things that you should look for, and look out for when picking a company to buy from:

• Security Certificates

These certificates should be pretty easy to spot, should say "protected by" close to the certificate and is normally a picture with some minor details in it.

• Secure Pages

When going to the payment section of the website in question, the url should start with https:// and in the bottom right corner of the website should be a little padlock. This shows that the website is protected, and people will not be able to see the details you are putting on the website.

• Payment Gateways

Many websites use payment gateways to handle their payments to their websites, these gateways include Paypal, World Pay and others. Using a payment gateway is the safest way to pay on a website, as they usually offer guarantees that you will receive the product, and will chase any shady companies.

• Does the website look good?

Is the website pleasant to look at, if a website doesn't look nice to look at, then it probably means they have skimped on budget when setting up the website, and skimping on budget may mean that they haven't spent time ensuring your data is secure!

• Do some background research!

This is one of the most important parts of buying a product on the internet, simply type the websites name into Google or your favourite search engine. Click on a few results, and make sure there haven't been issues with customers not receiving their products. Take this with a pinch of salt though, as company's competitors will often post bad things about a company to deter their sales.

• Are the prices normal?

Often if you find a complete bargain that you would think is unreal, it is likely that it is unreal, and they are just out to get your money!

• Ebay

The best place to find the cheapest products, however please be aware that when buying from Ebay that products are generally in used condition, and Ebay sellers often hide details of a product within the text. (High delivery costs or only getting part of a product)

• Price Comparison Websites

There are huge amounts of price comparison websites on the internet, these websites get paid by the sellers of the products on a pay per click basis. These websites, will not link to extremely bad websites, however you cannot guarantee that websites listed on these price comparison websites will be legit websites.

• Google Searching

Websites that show up when searching for furniture on Google are generally not shady companies just looking for your money. This is because Google ranks websites on the internet mainly by the amount of links that go to the website. If a website ranks high, it means that many websites link to the website in question, which normally means that the people linking like the website. However, please still be aware that this is not a failsafe method of finding places to purchase furniture from.

• Go from your recommendations

Websites that come recommended to you are generally the best websites to use, a friend with past experience would be the best source to decide on a website to buy a product from. I have recommended somewhere to buy products from above.
